    The Leaf is a great car, especially for small families in a city. It has more cargo room than any other electric car that's not twice its price, has great off the line acceleration for merging onto the freeway or turning onto a busy street, and the ProPilot driver assistance features provide a great layer of extra safety without encouraging inattention. The interior is very quiet even on the freeway, so conversations with kids in the backseat are easy, and everyone can listen to the music comfortably. I took off one star in value because at MSRP the Leaf really is overpriced. With careful shopping you should be able to get one for several thousand less, and if you also qualify for the federal tax rebate it is probably the best value car you can buy. We drive ~1000 miles a month and our fuel cost is $100/month less than paying for gas, plus there are almost no maintenance or service costs. You still have to rotate and eventually replace the tires, but there is no oil to replace, the strong regenerative braking means the brake pads should last 100,000 miles, and there are no spark plugs, transmission, timing belt, or exhaust system to maintain. One caveat: the Leaf batteries have historically not fared well in extremely hot places like Phoenix. Avoid the Leaf if you live somewhere it usually gets above 100 F in the summer.
  • Decent Bargain for an Electric

    I've had this car for a year now, mostly using it for my short 17 mile commute to work. With 156 miles of range, I can charge a little more than once per week. My SV came loaded with navigation, pro-pilot assist, lane departure, self-adjusting cruise control, etc. But really you don't need those fancy features because you don't have enough range for interstate trips. The biggest complaint is no telescoping steering wheel, I'm 6 feet tall and it's very hard to get a comfortable position. Also the back seat is too tight for my upcoming teenage boys. This is a great 2nd or 3rd car, not good as a primary. Maybe soon the ranges will increase to 300+ and then all the interstate gadgets will actually come in handy.
  • Not ready for Prime Time

    If this vehicle truly got 150 miles per full charge, as advertised, there wouldn't be a problem. It gets far less, (60-70%) and on any trip where you have to charge it to get home it starts gulping electricity, because of poor battery thermal management, a problem Nissan knows about but downplays. They (corporate) are now telling me that my occasional 200 mile trips are not in the design plan. Worst example: It took me 7 hours to go 94 miles, limping from charging station to charging station where even after 1/2 hour charge I could only get 7%-15% battery charge--barely enough to get to the next charging station, let alone home. THE RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE 0/5 STARS IF ALLOWED
